Ophthalmology Associates was established in 1972 by Dr. Joe Bussey and Dr. Rufus Roberts. Both Dr. Bussey and Dr. Roberts had previously practiced in Fort Worth with another well-known physician, Dr. Harold Beasley.

The founding of Ophthalmology Associates initiated their vision to create a larger multi-specialty eye clinic. In addition to continuing to offer general ophthalmology care, it would be better staffed and equipped to provide coverage of all the different types of specialized eye care.

In pursuit of that objective, they developed a new larger clinic facility in Fort Worth on Henderson Street, near the central medical district, and recruited Dr. Tom Smith, a specialist in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Smith practiced with OA until his retirement. Within a year of Dr. Smith’s arrival, Dr. Dan Bruhl, a Cataract & Lens Implant specialist, joined OA and provided outstanding cataract surgical results for over 35 years.

Over time, several highly qualified specialists joined the group to provide additional expertise for Glaucoma, Cataract & Lens Implant, Retinal, Corneal, Pediatric & Strabismus, Plastic, and Oculoplastic Reconstructive Surgery, Neuro-ophthalmology, and LASIK. A considerably larger five-story main office facility was completed nearby in 1993 and continues to serve as the main location to the present time.

This facility allows Ophthalmology Associates to provide the full range of eye care services including general examinations and eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions.

Having several different sub-specialists under the same roof provides a significant quality of care advantage to patients. Patients can be seen by the most qualified and experienced physician their particular problem requires, with complete continuity of their medical records, and often without having to travel to another location.

Additionally, if the patient’s physician has any uncertainty about a particular problem during an office visit, it becomes very easy and efficient for him to ask another sub-specialist that is usually available in the office for their opinion.

As Ophthalmology Associates’ capabilities expanded in Fort Worth, it also extended its quality care by establishing satellite offices in surrounding areas and cities that in most cases had not previously had the benefit of specialized eye care.

Currently, Ophthalmology Associates includes the main office in Fort Worth and four additional satellite offices that offer both General Ophthalmology care as well as the above-mentioned specialized care.

Vision is perhaps the most precious of all the senses, so while attention is always on providing this care in the safest possible manner; we also strive to provide a relaxed and comfortable environment for our patients.

Our staff of board-certified ophthalmologists, board-certified therapeutic optometrists in adult and pediatric ophthalmic specialties, and JCAHPO-certified support staff is committed to continuing the traditions that have enabled Ophthalmology Associates to be successful.

The best patient outcomes result from care delivered by highly qualified and experienced physicians & optometrists assisted by certified staff and supported by the latest technical equipment.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide the people of Fort Worth and the surrounding counties with the highest level of eye care available anywhere in the world. Equally important is to be our patient’s advocate, only doing or suggesting things that we feel are in our patient’s best interest. We take our responsibility to our patients and the physicians or friends that send them, very seriously.

In doing so, we seek to consistently meet or exceed their patient care and service expectations. We will do so by investing in the latest treatment modalities we feel have shown themselves to be a clear benefit to our patients.

We will continue to engage in research that we believe is likely to benefit our current and future patients. We will ensure our physicians and staff are continual learners. We will provide a clean and comfortable environment. We will make ourselves available and accessible for urgent and emergent needs at all times.

We will seek to maintain a comprehensive mix of eye care services so that the majority of our patient’s eye care needs can be met under one roof. This entails having a range of practitioners: optometrists, general ophthalmologists, and well as specialists in a range of subspecialty areas. We seek to have all of our clinical staff working at their highest level of training.

We will work as a team and thus place our patients with the physician most suited for their needs at any given time. In addition, our goal is to provide skilled surgical care with unparalleled outcomes. We will also provide refractive surgery (LASIK), and the ability to purchase eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Our mission is to make Ophthalmology Associates a wonderful place to work. We will invest in the personal and professional development of our staff members. We will provide them with the tools necessary to most effectively perform their jobs. We will be mindful of ways to help our employees fulfill their family obligations. We will reward our employees with above-average compensation packages, with the expectation that they strive for excellence in their respective positions and with regard to customer service.

In order to meet the aforestated goals of attracting and maintaining the highest quality physicians and staff, we must conduct our affairs in a financially responsible manner. This requires being good stewards of our resources and collecting reasonable fees for services rendered.
